Know the law! For each ERISA welfare benefit plan that you maintain, ERISA requires that a summary plan description be provided to participants and certain others. On Thursday, February 12, 2004, we presented (and recorded) this 90minute teleweb seminar entitled "SPDs for Insured and SelfFunded ERISA Plans: What Employers Need to Know and Do." Our seminar is designed to help employers and advisors understand exactly what they must do to comply with ERISAs oftenmisunderstood SPD requirements for welfare benefit plans (medical, dental, health FSAs, etc.). Heres what we covered: * What plans must provide SPDs? Who gets one? When? How to distribute? * What information must an SPD contain? Our checklist will help! We will also discuss readability, layout and formatting requirements. * What information must be communicated when the plan changes (the "summary of material modifications")? Special SMM requirements for material reductions in group health plan benefits. * Do you need one SPD or multiple SPDs? Do you have lots of benefits but only one ERISA plan? The role of "wrap documents." * Roadmap for writing an SPD. Where do you start? What steps are involved? Handouts: A 50page handout of the seminar slides, polling results and other information is provided by download.
