The continuous fiber model is an important new capability for FLUENT 6.1. The continuous fiber model combines 1D modeling of the fibers with complete 3D modeling of the surrounding fluid, accounting for momentum, heat, and mass transfer in both directions (twoway coupling). This feature can be used to model the manufacturing of glass fibers, polymer fibers, and yarns. It allows for CFD to be applied to the design of quench box systems, by letting users model the entrainment of air during production of the fibers. The number of fibers represented by the model may be several thousand or more; therefore it would not be practical to resolve each fiber individually using the mesh. The continuous fiber model is compatible with the discrete ordinates radiation model and the P1 radiation model. This allows for the modeling of radiation exchange with the glass fibers.
