USDA administers four major domestic food assistance programs that exclusively or primarily serve the nutritional needs of children. The National School Lunch Program, the School Breakfast Program, the Child and Adult Care Food Program, and the Summer Food Service Program together account for a quarter of USDAs domestic food assistance outlays. The child nutrition programs work individually and in concert to provide a nutrition safety net for children.

USDAs domestic food assistance programs affect the daily lives of millions of people. About 1 in 5 Americans is estimated to participate in at least 1 of 15 food assistance programs at some point during the year. Expenditures for USDAs 15 food assistance programs increased 9.4 percent in fiscal 2003 to $41.6 billion. This exceeded the previous historical record of $38.1 billion that was spent on food assistance in fiscal 1996.

In 2002, total meat consumption (red meat, poultry, and fish) amounted to 200 pounds per person, 23 pounds above the level in 1970. Americans consumed, on average, 18 pounds less red meat (mostly less beef) than in 1970, 37 pounds more poultry, and 4 pounds more fish (get these data and more through the Food Consumption (Per Capita) Data System).
